Encounter the abundant plant and bird life of Earth Sanctuary with tour guides Yvonne & Johnny Palka, Earth Sanctuary's closest neighbors. Both are biologists by training.

During the tour, Yvonne and/or Johnny will give an introduction to wetlands, the value of wetlands, point out the major tree species, explain forest succession, and show and tell what birds live and breed on the ponds. Bring your binoculars to view the birds on the Newman Ponds, designated a "habitat of importance" by the Audubon Society. The tour also includes an overview of the property and trails, as well as the sites of the Labyrinth, Dolmen, and Cottonwood Stone Circle.

Group size - 1-8 people. $40 plus $7/person entry fees.
Group size - 9-16 people. $80 plus $7/person entry fees.
Group size - 17-25 people. $100 plus $7/person entry fees.

Group size guidelines (group sizes are limited during bird breeding season)
  1. March to mid-April and July-August - Group tours should be limited to 10 people.
  2. September through February - Group tours can be up to 25 people.

Johnny & Yvonne Palka - Recently retired from academic careers, the Palka's have a deep love for the land and its restoration. Yvonne was a professor of psychology at Antioch University Seattle and worked in building bridges and connections between body, mind, environment and spirit for many years. Johnny was a professor of biology at the University of Washington and helped to found the new Program on the Environment which is broadly interdisciplinary and includes components from the natural and social sciences, law, business and the humanities. He also helped to launch the Restoration Ecology Network whose students have worked at Earth Sanctuary. Prior to this he had a long and distinguished career both as a researcher in the neurosciences and as an innovative teacher.
